Benchmark Report: Living Wage Report for Sri Lanka with Focus on the Estate Sector

This report estimates a living wage for the workers in the estate sector (tea plantation industry) in Sri Lanka in December 2015. The study uses the Anker methodology to estimate the living wage (Anker, 2005; Anker & Anker, 2017). This methodology has been widely used in developing countries to estimate living wages internationally. This methodology has been used to estimate living wages in urban, rural, and non-metropolitan urban settings for the GLWC with 23 living wage estimates published or scheduled for publishing in the next two months, spanning geographies in 13 countries. This work is an expansion of earlier work by the Ankers in urban areas for a multi-national corporation spanning ten countries.

Update Report: Living Wage Reference Value Update 2023 for Urban Sri Lanka

This report updates the Anker Living Wage Reference Value for urban Sri Lanka to June 2023. This was LKR 84,231 (USD 259) in April 2022 in the original report, comprised of a Net Living Wage of LKR 77,492 (USD 238), plus a social security contribution of LKR 6,737 (USD 21). The updated Anker Gross Living Wage for June 2023 is LKR 113,987 (USD 348) per month, comprised of a Net living Wage of LKR 104,868 (USD 320), plus social security contribution of LKR 9,119 (USD 28). Inflation in this period was 35.3% and it increased the Net Living Wage. Without accounting for inflation, the Living Wage estimated in 2022 would not be sufficient for families to have a basic but decent standard of living in June 2023, because the purchasing power of the Living Wage would have considerably decreased. Social security contributions were calculated using laws in force in 2023.
