Ian Prates

Senior Researcher & Innovation Lead

Ian Prates is a Sociologist with more than 15 years of experience of in the areas of social development, labor market, poverty, racial and gender inequalities, statistics and qualitative methods. At ARI is responsible for conduct research, manage projects and develop innovations. He created, in partnership with Richard and Martha Anker, the Anker Reference Values Methodology and the Anker Subnational Estimates Methodology, publishing more than 80 living wage studies in 50+ countries.

From 2018 to 2020, Ian lived in China and managed the creation of the Brazil-China Center for Innovation and Competitiveness, a partnership between the Belt and Road Institute from Shenzhen University and the University of São Paulo Innovation Center.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he coordinated the Labor Market and Social Policy areas of the Public Policies and Society Network, publishing more than 40 data driven bulletins and advising local governments in copying with the socioeconomics effects of the pandemic.

Since 2021, Ian collaborates with the ILO Office in Brazil to develop the Brazilian Occupational Guide and the Brazilian Occupational Projection System in a partnership with the Ministry of Labor. He is also a Senior Researcher at the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), the Brazilian ARI affiliate institution, where he coordinates the Living Wage Research Group.

Ian has a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) with a period as a Visiting Fellow in Columbia University (New York).
