Upcoming Study-

Sub-National Estimate- India

In India, a significant portion of the workforce earns below the minimum wage. According to a 2018 report by the International Labour Organization, approximately 33% of wage workers—equating to around 62 million individuals—were paid less than the indicative national minimum wage, with women disproportionately affected.

This widespread prevalence of sub-minimum wages underscores the critical need for comprehensive living wage studies in India. Such research is essential to accurately assess the income required for workers to afford a decent standard of living, considering factors like housing, healthcare, food, education, and clothing. Implementing a living wage standard would not only enhance the well-being of workers and their families but also contribute to reducing poverty and income inequality. Recognizing this, India is collaborating with the International Labour Organization to establish a living wage standard by 2025, aiming to replace the current minimum wage system with one that better reflects the true cost of living.

To do this.. we need a correct and comparable living wage estimate for the whole of India.
